My son, give attention to my words; Incline your ear to my sayings. Do not let them depart from your eyes; Keep them in the midst of your heart; (Proverbs 4:20, 21 NKJV).
You must understand that, the Bible is the Word of God. The Bible is God's revelation of Himself to us in written form. The Bible is not an ordinary book, and it is more than just a catalogue of stories; it is God's written revelation to man. By virtue of that, you cannot read the Bible as you read a newspaper or a history book.
As a Christian, your greatest need in life is not money, it's to hear a Word from God. And God speaks to us through His written Word first which is the Bible and in it the Will of God for our lives is revealed. He has given us His written Word so that we can know His voice, His character, His plan and His purpose for our lives.
Now, Proverbs 4:20 says, "My son, give attention to my words...". The question is why does God want us to give attention to His Word or Words; the reason is, if you give attention to His Words, any other thing will give you attention. Kings will give you attention, money will give you attention, and nations will give you attention; because the Word of God created all things. Read this for yourself; "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men"- (John 1:1-4 KJV).
You see that, all things were made by the Word of God, including life itself; so when you give God your attention through His Word any other thing will give you attention both living and non-living things!
